Since its inception Corporate Search has been involved in providing drug detection teams working in hospital environments. Starting at Broadmoor Hospital with passive screening of visitors then moving on to the other West London Health Trust hospitals working with the Broadmoor search teams using both passive and pro-active dogs. Through this work we gained experience of working in a ward environment and an understanding of how to work our dogs effectively, safely and causing as little disruption to the ward as possible. Over the years our handlers have gained a good working knowledge of the work done by mental health professionals in secure units, allowing us to work in a way that is not detrimental to the care and treatment of patients.
As a company we now specialise in working drug detection dogs within the mental health environment at a number of NHS Trusts and privately owned units and our handlers work well with hospital staff and patients enabling us to provide a first class service.
The dogs have no preconceived prejudices and will indicate only when they detect their target scents. In the past this has led to discovering patients that staff did not realise were abusing drugs enabling them to use this information in ongoing treatment plans. We have also found drugs on very vulnerable patients who have been pressured or unwittingly been used to help drug users conceal or bring drugs onto the ward.
If appropriate, after searching the ward the handlers let patients interact with the dogs if they so wish. This is usually a very good way to leave the ward on a positive note and quite a few of the patients enjoy this experience.
During searches other prohibited items are often found and our handlers are trained to recognise these.
Corporate Search understands the importance of client and patient confidentiality and will ensure no information about either is collected or released to any third party.
Our handlers are also aware of religious or cultural issues that some people have with regard to dogs. Corporate Search have developed protocols to ensure that we can work the dogs whilst being sensitive to any personal beliefs that we may encounter.
